Q: What is the Epsom & Ewell Library of Things?
A: It is a community project, run by the Epsom & Ewell Climate Action Network (eeCAN), that allows local residents to borrow items for free. Instead of buying something you may only use once or twice a year (like a carpet cleaner or a party gazebo), you can simply borrow it from the library.
Q: Why does this project exist?
A: The main goals are to help residents save money, reduce clutter and storage issues, and lower waste and carbon emissions by sharing resources. It's all about making "borrowing, not buying" an easy choice for the community.
Q: How much does it cost to borrow an item?
A: It is completely free. All items can be borrowed from the library free of charge.
Q: Where is the Library of Things located?
A: The Library of Things is based at Bourne Hall.
Q: When is it open?
A: At the moment we are running a test borrow service on reduced hours. Pick up and drop off is on Thursdays at 1030am directly from us at the store located in Bourne Hall near the end of the car park.
Q: What kind of items can I borrow?
A: The library stocks "occasional use" items that have been generously donated by supporters. This includes:
DIY & Tools: Pressure washers, wallpaper strippers, hedge trimmers, moisture detection meters, and other DIY tools.
Cleaning: Carpet cleaners and steam cleaners.
Events & Leisure: Party gazebos.
Kitchen & Home: Bread makers and document shredders.
Q: How can I see what's available to borrow?
A: You can browse the full, up-to-date inventory of items on our official borrowing website: https://eecanlibraryofthings.myturn.com/library/.
Q: How can I donate an item?
A: We are always looking for donations of "nearly new" or "spare" occasional-use items that are in good condition and would be in high demand.
If you have an item to donate, please contact the team first by emailing eeclimateactionnetwork@gmail.com.
A volunteer will then arrange to assess the item. If it needs a minor repair, we can arrange that with our partners at the Epsom Repair Café. See current item "wishlist" at Donate to the LoT.
Q: Who runs the Library of Things?
A: The project is operated and administered by a friendly team of local volunteers from the Epsom and Ewell Climate Action Network (eeCAN). We work in partnership with the SCC Library Service, Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, and in association with the Epsom Repair Café.
Q: How can I volunteer or find out more?
A: We are always happy to welcome new volunteers. In the Library of Things our tasks mostly revolve around item care, taking photos and listing items on the lending system, and inventory. The larger group also has plenty of opportunities from gardening to communications, socials, web and design. When we are looking for specific skills we advertise posts with Central Surrey Voluntary Action (CVSA) .
